Alfalfa-Meadow Fescue Mixtures - Something to Consider

چکیده

Adaptation and Establishment Meadow fescue prefers deep, rich soils, and while surviving in wet soils, it cannot tolerate flooding. It will survive under dry conditions but is more sensitive to drought than many other grasses. It can be grown in areas suitable for timothy, and is considerably more winter hardy than tall fescue in northern environments. Meadow fescue is closely related to both tall fescue and ryegrasses, and a number of hybrids have been developed using various mixtures of meadow fescue, tall fescue, and annual and perennial ryegrass (festuloliums). Festuloliums vary widely in appearance, winter hardiness, and forage quality, due to the relative proportions of fescue and ryegrass in the hybrid.

Impact of endophytic fungi on seed and seedling characteristics in tall and meadow fescues

Tall fescue and meadow fescue are naturally infected with fungal endophytes, Neotyphodiumcoenophialum and Neotyphodium uncinatum, respectively. Seed traits are an important measureof the effects of the endophytic fungi which has been less addressed. In this study we usedendophyte-infected (EI) and endophyte-free (EF) clones of tall and meadow fescue genotypes inthe field to investigate the effe...

The Manganese Content of Grasses and Alfalfa from Grazed Plots '

The nutritive value of manganese and its occurrence in animal and plant tissue has received considerable attention within the last few years. The literature relating to manganese in plant tissue has been reviewed by Lindow and Peterson (^)^, who reported analyses of 84 samples representing the principal classes of human foods. In a later paper by Skinner and Peterson {12), analyses of 54 feedin...

Orthology Guided Transcriptome Assembly of Italian Ryegrass and Meadow Fescue for Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism Discovery.

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) represent natural DNA sequence variation. They can be used for various applications including the construction of high-density genetic maps, analysis of genetic variability, genome-wide association studies, and map-based cloning. Here we report on transcriptome sequencing in the two forage grasses, meadow fescue ( Huds.) and Italian ryegrass ( Lam.), and i...

How good is the turbid medium-based approach for accounting for light partitioning in contrasted grass--legume intercropping systems?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Most studies dealing with light partitioning in intercropping systems have used statistical models based on the turbid medium approach, thus assuming homogeneous canopies. However, these models could not be directly validated although spatial heterogeneities could arise in such canopies. The aim of the present study was to assess the ability of the turbid medium approach to ...
